The Department of Family Medicine offers a fully accredited, one-year fellowship in sports medicine to train you in the pathophysiology, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries, as well as the management of medical problems and illnesses in the athlete. Clinical experience will occur in different settings including office practice at K Valley Orthopedics and Western Michigan University Sports Medicine Clinics. The fellow will serve as the team physician for Kalamazoo College, a Division III college that fields intercollegiate teams in football, men's and women's soccer, basketball, volleyball and numerous other sports. Other opportunities include event coverage for the USTA Boys Tennis Championships, professional soccer, professional baseball, and area high school athletics.

A well-rounded education in sports medicine is provided by sports medicine faculty members and a team of podiatrists, nutritionists, a cardiologist, physical therapists, athletic trainers, a social worker and a psychiatrist. The fellow is encouraged to conduct research with facilities available at Western Michigan University and MSU/KCMS. The fellow's conference costs for annual meetings of both the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine will be covered. A Sports Medicine Journal Club and various seminars are part of the well-rounded educational experience.

Our sports medicine fellowship is unique in offering challenging clinical experiences, exposure to grade school, high school, college and professional athletes, a dynamic and comprehensive educational experience and support for individual research.
