Family Medicine
Family Medicine Outpatient Elective (FMP 610A)
Prerequisite
Third- or fourth-year medical student
Objectives
Upon completion of the elective the student should:
- Understand continuity of care in context of the family
- Be familiar with the evaluation and management of common primary care health problems in a primary care practice
- Understand the biopsychosocial model in health care
- Be able to apply basic principles of prevention
Students are assigned to either the MSU/KCMS clinic or to a private office. This elective provides the opportunity to perform initial patient interviews and physical examinations, assist with procedures, enhance presentation skills and learn cost effective management of patients. Didactic teaching sessions are held each week.
Family Medicine Inpatient Elective (FMP 612)
Prerequisite
Fourth-year medical student who has completed basic Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pediatric clerkships
Objectives
This elective is designed to:
- Provide an opportunity to assume increased patient management responsibilities for hospitalized patients
- Enhance patient evaluation, case presentation, team management and discharge planning skills
- Gain familiarity with the use of consultants
This elective provides an advanced Family Medicine experience. Students are assigned to the family medicine inpatient service and will have primary responsibility in managing patients. Call is every fourth night.
Rural Family Medicine Elective (FMP 610D)
Prerequisite
Third- or fourth-year medical student
Objectives
Upon completion of the elective the student should:
- Understand continuity of care in a rural setting
- Be familiar with the evaluation and management of common primary care health problems in a rural setting
- Understand the biopsychosocial model in health care
- Be able to apply basic principles of prevention
Students are assigned to a family physician practice and have the opportunity to participate in patient care in a rural setting. Call responsibilities vary.
Sports Medicine Elective (FMP 617)
Prerequisite
Third- or fourth-year medical student, Limited Availability
Objectives
Upon completion of the elective the student should:
- Be familiar with the examination of major joints in sports related injuries
- Be familiar with the approach to the management of the most common sports related injuries
- Gain exposure to the role/use of exercise modalities and physical therapy in the management of sports related injuries
- Be familiar with prevention of athletic injuries
- Be aware of medical issues related to mass participation in sports
Students have the opportunity to see patients in the outpatient setting as well as accompany attendings and fellows during training room visits. Students will be expected to attend sporting events and write up appropriate cases with the assistance of the attending.
