Emergency Medicine Elective (HM 630)
Prerequisites
- Medicine Clerkship (MED 608 or equivalent)
- Surgery Clerkship (SUR 608 or equivalent)
- Pediatrics Clerkship (PHD 600 or equivalent)
Objectives
Upon completion of the clerkship the student should:
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of prehospital emergency medical services and how they interface with hospital departments.
- Understand the basic principles of emergency wound care and demonstrate appropriate closing technique.
- Demonstrate a sound approach to the patient presenting with chest pain, abdominal pain and headache including an appropriate differential diagnosis, diagnostic and therapeutic plan for each.
- Demonstrate a competent approach to the febrile child, including an appropriate differential diagnosis, diagnostic and therapeutic plan.
- Understand the emergency evaluation and treatment of both minor musculoskeletal injury as well as major trauma and shock.
This elective offers students the opportunity to function as a subintern in a high volume, Level 1 emergency department under the supervision of the emergency medicine faculty. Customized electives in emergency medicine research, pre-hospital care or air medical care may be available.
