Curriculum & Rotation

Participating residents replace five of their primary care program electives with five Women’s Health Track required rotations. The women’s health rotations are integrated, using resources from Kalamazoo-area hospitals and the community. You’ll learn through an interdisciplinary approach by collaborating with physicians, social workers, nurses, pharmacists, clergy and community educators and agencies.

Required Rotations
Rotation Description
Adolescent Medicine
Covers general issues regarding preventative medicine and screening pertinent to adolescents, as well as specific exposure to teen gynecology topics.
Behavioral Medicine
This rotation is balanced between traditional patient care and non-traditional experiences involving ancillary and support services pertaining to women’s health. The experiences include, but are not limited to, participation in women’s advocacy programs, support groups, involvement at the local domestic violence shelter and exposure to biofeedback and alternative medical therapies.
Perinatology
Covers care of medical problems in the high-risk pregnant patient. Pediatric and med/peds residents may also be involved in delivery and care of the high-risk newborn.
Women's Health Selective
Residents select a sub-specialty elective, such as cardiology, onocology or any other sub-specialty elective where issues specific to women’s health can be identified. Residents complete women’s health readings and/or a project as well as a presentation relating to a women's health topic within the selected sub-specialty.
Advanced Women's Health and Procedures
Traditionally completed in the senior year. Residents spend time in a obstetrical/gynecology clinic practice setting and also have the opportunity to perform procedures in the ambulatory, same day surgery and hospital operating room settings. During this month residents are expected to perfect their skills in performing pelvic exams, STD screening and treatment and counseling patients regarding contraceptive and hormone replacement options as well as develop procedure skills in such procedures as colposcopy and endometrial biopsies.
