Policy

Michigan State University Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies (MSU/KCMS) will only appoint residents who fulfill the requirements of the ACGME and AOA in that they are:

  • 1. Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada that are accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME); or
  • 2. Graduates of colleges of Osteopathic Medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA); or
  • 3. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a Fifth Pathway Program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school; or
  • 4. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
  • a. Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment; or
  • b. Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S. licensing jurisdiction in which they are training.

All residents appointed at MSU/KCMS, must fit into one of the above-mentioned categories.  MSU/KCMS programs participate in the National Resident Matching Program and the AOA Matching Program.  All residents must receive a salary.

MSU/KCMS ensures that all sponsored programs select from among eligible applicants on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity.  Programs will not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, veteran status or any other legally protected status.

MSU/KCMS will provide all interviewees, via the MSU/KCMS website, with the following information for review: Resident Appointment Policy (which includes visa information), Sample Resident Agreement, Salary Schedule, and Benefits Information.

MSU/KCMS accepts non-U.S. citizen residency applicants with J-1 visas.  MSU/KCMS will also consider applicants with H-1B visa status on an individual basis (approval of both the Program Director and the Assistant Dean/President and CEO/DIO is required).  If an applicant with H-1B visa status is Matched/offered a contract, MSU/KCMS will cover the cost of processing required H-1B documentation as required by law.

If a Resident is unable to begin his/her duties on their contract start date for any reason, the Resident may be terminated at the discretion of the Program Director and CEO.
