Outpatient Medicine-Pediatrics Elective (MSU/KCMS)

- Basic Medicine Clerkship (MED 608)
- Basic Pediatric Clerkship (PHD 600)
Objectives
Upon completion of the elective the student should
- Be familiar with the evaluation and management of common medical problems and the basic principles of health maintenance for children and adults
- Gain an appreciation for the similarities and differences of a disease within the disciplines of internal medicine and pediatrics
- Be familiar with the unique problems of transitioning to adult care in patients with chronic disease
- Recognize the importance of psychosicial issues in patient care
This rotation is designed to provide individualized teaching in the management of outpatient medical problems for students seriously considering a combined Med-Peds residency (an ideal elective for students pursuing this career track). Students divide their time between the combined Medicine-Pediatrics clinic and the Internal Medicine and Pediatric clinics. Students may also elect to spend time in a Medicine or Pediatric subspecialty. Common ambulatory problems, psychosocial issues affecting patient compliance and general health maintenance care are addressed. Other activities include Medicine-Pediatrics grand rounds and teaching conferences in Medicine and Pediatrics.
Inpatient Medicine-Pediatrics Infectious Disease Elective (MSU/KCMS)

- Basic Internal Medicine Clerkship (MED 608)
- Basic Pediatric Clerkship (PHD 600)
Objectives
Upon completion of the elective the student should
- Be proficient in the comprehensive evaluation and physical exam skills in evaluation of children and adults with infectious diseases
- Be familiar with the interpretation of laboratory, procedural and diagnostic data as it relates to infectious diseases
- Gain an appreciation for the different presentations of a variety of infectious diseases that span the range of ages from infants to geriatrics
- Be familiar with the evaluation of immunological deficiencies
- Be familiar with the evaluation and management of the immune compromised patient with an infectious disease
- Gain a working knowledge of appropriate antiobiotic usage
- Gain an understanding of resistance issues regarding antibiotics
Students are assigned to a Med-Peds physician board certified in adult and pediatric infectious diseases and will work up consultations and round daily with the supervising attending. Students will also be required to present cases at the Med-Peds ID case conference. Students are required to attend morning report, grand rounds and teaching conferences in internal medicine and pediatrics.
